How to Repot a Hindu Rope Plant

The Hindu rope plant, or Hoya carnosa, is a prolific grower, so you may need to repot it several times. The best time to do it is late spring or early summer, when the plant is growing rapidly and is able to absorb the shock of the transplant without difficulty. But you should not wait to repot if you have purchased a rope plant at a different time of year. Just be sure to handle the plant with care and keep it moist for several days after the transplant.

Instructions

    • 1

Water your Hindu rope plant. Wait two days.

    • 2

Add warm water to a bag of potting soil until the dirt is moist but not saturated. Stir to distribute the water evenly.

    • 3

Select a pot that is the same size or larger than the existing pot.

    • 4

Add 1 inch of moist potting soil to the new pot.

    • 5

Place your hand around the base of the plant and tip the old pot so that the plant falls into your palm. Cradle the soil and roots, the root ball, with your other hand.

    • 6

Massage the root ball to loosen the roots and shed some of the old dirt.

    • 7

Place the plant in the new pot. Center it.

    • 8

Scoop handfuls of moist soil around the root ball until the roots are completely covered.

    • 9

Water the plant later in the day if the soil appears dusty or dry.
