How to Apply Diatomaceous Earth on Indoor Plants

Diatomaceous earth is made up of the skeletal remains of ancient algae-like plants called diatoms. While this product is nontoxic to humans and other mammals, it spells doom for many insect species. An all-natural alternative to pesticides and similar products, diatomaceous earth works by cutting into the outer shells of pests or tears at their organs if ingested, either of which kills insects. Use diatomaceous earth on indoor plants that are under attack by assorted insects to keep plants healthy and strong.

Instructions

Make a shaker out of an old coffee can to reduce waste when applying diatomaceous earth to indoor plants. Pouring directly from the container or bag or using a spoon can result in overuse of the product. Poke small holes in a plastic coffee can lid with a pen or other sharp instrument, pour some diatomaceous earth into the coffee can and place the lid tightly over the can.

Use the shaker to dust the plants with diatomaceous earth, as well as the soil in each plant container. You might also want to add a few dustings of the material around the planters, depending on the severity of the pest problem you are experiencing.

Repeat applications as needed until your pest problem has been resolved.
