How to Grow Majesty Palm Trees Under Artificial Light

Majesty palm trees (Ravenea glauca) are native to Madagascar. They need sunlight to grow healthy and strong, but during the winter months, or if you live in the northern United States, the days are shorter and the skies are often cloudy. You can provide the majesty palm tree the light it needs by installing artificial lights. There are many different types of grow lights to choose from, but many gardeners choose florescent lights because they are cheaper to use and they emit less heat.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the palm tree so you know where to place the grow light. You need 2 to 3 inches of space between the top of the palm and the grow lights, but the grow lights should not be more than 12 inches away. At that distance the light will be too diffused and your majesty palm won't benefit from it.

    • 2

Install a fluorescent plant light where you want the palm to grow, according to the manufacturer’s directions. If possible, choose an east facing window. The majesty palm will get natural sunlight during the morning hours.

    • 3

Fill a tray with pebbles. It should be bigger than palms’ growing pot. Pour water into the tray, leaving the water level just below the top surface of the pebbles. If the pot is too large to fit into a container, fill three or four smaller pebble trays or saucers and place them on the floor around the palm’s pot.

    • 4

Position the majesty palm tree under the grow lights and turn them on. Run the grow lights for 14 to 16 hours each day and turn the light off for eight hours. For better growth, turn the lights off and on at the same time every day.

    • 5

Water when the soil is dry. Allow the soil to dry out between watering. Mist the foliage daily, or run a humidifier close to the palm tree.

    • 6

Feed the palm with an all-purpose house plant fertilizer from March to October. During the other months, the palm is going into the dormancy period.
