How to Germinate Nepenthes Seed

Nepenthes, also called tropical pitcher plants and Monkey Cups, is a carnivorous plant native to diverse habitats such as Madagascar and India. This plant forms little pitchers that attract flies and lure them inside. If you want to germinate Nepenthes seeds, you can choose among 100 species. Complex hybrids such as N.x Superba and N.x Mixta are easier seeds to germinate, according to the International Carnivorous Plant Society. It takes five years from seed to a plant you can display to friends.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a bowl with water and place some coco peat inside. Allow it to soak up moisture for one or two days. Change the water twice a day.

    • 2

Remove the coco peat from the water and squeeze it with your hands to remove most of the water. You want the coco peat to be moist but not dripping wet.

    • 3

Fill a plastic container with 1 inch of coco peat. Level it out with your fingers.

    • 4

Sprinkle the Nepenthes seeds evenly over the top of the coco peat. Try not to clump the seeds together. Spray the seeds and coco peat with pure water.

    • 5

Place the plastic container into a plastic bag. Place it in an area that receives indirect light or under florescent lights. Maintain the temperature at 80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 6

Check the coco peat every day or every other day for moisture. The coco peat needs to be moist for the Nepenthes seeds to germinate. Use a sprayer to rewet the coco peat. If mold appears, spray the seeds with pure water. It can take one week to one year for the seeds to germinate.
