How to Regrow a Stalk of Dracaena Massangeana

Dracaena Massangeana makes an ideal houseplant. It can tolerate bright light and dim areas and it thrives in the year-round warm temperatures found indoors. The plant, Dracaena fragrans "Massangeana," goes by the common name of corn plant. The long narrow leaves grow 3 feet long and 4 inches wide, resembling the leaves of a true corn plant. To propagate a Dracaena Massangeana, simply take a section of the stalk and regrow it in a pot.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a section of a Dracaena Massangeana stalk into sections 3 to 4 inches long. Make the bottom cut at a 45 degree angle and the top cut horizontal to help keep track of which end is up.

    • 2

Mix clean coarse sand in a bucket with water until it is damp and crumbly when you handle it.

    • 3

Fill 2- to 4-inch pots with the damp sand. Smooth off the top with your finger but don't pack down the sand.

    • 4

Slide one Dracaena Massangeana cutting into the pot so that half is below the sand and half is above the sand.

    • 5

Cover the top of the pot with a clear plastic bag and secure it around the base of the pot with a rubber band. This keeps the immediate environment around the cutting humid to increase rooting success.

    • 6

Keep the Dracaena Massangeana cutting in a spot where the temperature remains between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 7

Remove the plastic bag every two to three days and mist the cutting with water. Condensation should be visible on the inside of the bag throughout the rooting process.

    • 8

Pull off the plastic bag after four to six weeks and give the Dracaena Massangeana cutting a light tug. If it resists, rooting success has been achieved.

    • 9

Transplant the cutting into a 4- to 6-inch pot. Use a commercial potting soil designed to drain well. Keep the cutting indoors in filtered light with a temperature of 75 F or above during the day and up to 10 degrees cooler at night.
