How to Grow a California Poppy From Seed Indoors

Californian poppies (Eschscholzia californica) are typically sown in the soil outdoors where they are to grow, but it is possible to grow them indoors in containers. The key to successful indoor growing is the position of the container. Place it on a sunny windowsill or in a light-flooded conservatory. Choose a container at least 12 inches deep so the plant will have plenty of root-room. Gardeners choose California poppies for their brightly colored blooms, which continue through the summer. California poppies grow to about 12 inches high.

Instructions

    • 1

Place some broken crocks in the bottom of your container to aid drainage.

    • 2

Fill the container with potting soil, leaving a 1-inch gap from the top of the container. This makes it easier to add water.

    • 3

Sow the seeds in the soil and cover with a thin layer of potting compost, just enough to hide the seeds. Do this in the spring for summer flowering.

    • 4

Water with a fine-spray fitting on your watering can to avoid disturbing the seeds.

    • 5

Thin out the seedlings when they appear, discarding the least vigorous of them. Allow each seedling about six inches of space around it.

    • 6

Keep the compost moist, but don’t leave the seedlings standing in water.
