Obtain containers at least 5 inches deep that have drainage holes and trays. Use a single small pot to grow one strawberry plant, or use long narrow planter boxes or larger hanging baskets to grow several strawberry plants together. Cover the bottom of the containers with wire mesh and place them on drainage trays.
Fill the pot two-thirds full with a top-quality potting mix that contains fertilizer, or add a fertilizer, such as 10-20-20 or 5-10-10, as directed into the soil mix.
Create a mound in the center of small containers, or spaced 6 to 8 inches apart in larger planters for each strawberry plant. Place the plant on the mound with the roots spread downward.
Fill the area around the roots with additional potting soil up to the strawberry plant’s crown. This is the part of the plant where the upper leaf stem meets the roots. A strawberry plant's crown must be level with the soil.
Water the strawberries well to settle them in place, and remove any leftover water remaining in the drainage trays. Wait until the top 1 inch of soil dries before watering again.
Place the potted strawberries in the screen room where they will get lots of sunlight. Turn the pots weekly if the plants don’t receive sunlight evenly.
Reapply fertilizer throughout the growing season, as instructed on the packaging.
Harvest the strawberries as needed when the fruits ripen.
