Sun Loving Potted Flowers for Spring

You look forward to spring’s array of fresh blooms, but sometimes it takes awhile for the temperatures outside to catch up with your enthusiasm. By purchasing potted plants you can have spring flowers that are ready when you are. Full sun versions can be placed outside when the temperature is more cooperative.
  1. Cumquats

    • For an exotic option, try growing cumquats. Cumquat plants provide fragrant white flowers in late winter and spring, and decorative bright orange fruits throughout summer and winter. The fruits can be used in marmalade and can also be eaten raw. The plant is a slow growing shrub. Potted cumquats are dwarfed versions of the plant that must be watered regularly to avoid dehydration.

    Ixora Coccinea

    • Ixora coccinea is also known as geranium, or by more the colorful moniker “jungle flame of the woods.” Its blooms vary – orange, pink red, white and yellow varieties are available. It can grow in partial shade to full sun. Geranium is a slow grower but its blooming period lasts much longer than just the spring. Ixora blooms periodically all year round.

    Freesia X Hybrida

    • Freesia x hybrida produces fragrant flowers that are suitable for cutting from late winter through mid-spring. It can be grown in full sun, partial sun, or partial shade. In addition to its use as a potted plant, freesia can be grown as a ground cover or as a cheery addition to rock gardens.

    Tropical Hibiscus

    • Tropical Hibiscus can be grown in pots indoors and can thrive in light conditions ranging from partial shade to full sun. It begins blooming in early spring and continues through late summer. This fast growing shrub produces a range of different flowers depending on which variety you buy. Showy blooms of orange, pink, red, white and yellow are possible.

    Pansies

    • There’s much to love about the common pansy. Also known as viola x wittrockiana, pansies soak up the sun. They start blooming in early winter and continue on through spring, summer and fall. They come in every color of the rainbow and are suitable for growing in containers. Pansies can also be used as cut flowers.
