How to Grow Mushrooms Indoors With Coffee Grounds

Substrates are any material on which a mushroom grows. Many mushroom types prefer wood substrates, typically logs. Some mushrooms, such as the oyster mushroom, sprouts successfully from unlikely surfaces, such as coffee grounds. To productively grow oyster mushrooms from a coffee ground mixed substrate, use a room for growing at 55 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

Instructions

    • 1

Add sawdust to the bowl, and then cover the sawdust with a layer of used coffee grounds. Add enough water to completely moisten the mass until it reaches a spongy consistency. Microwave the concoction on high for two minutes.

    • 2

Prepare milk cartons while sterilizing the substrate. Cut the top of each carton away creating a topless, wax cardboard box. Poke holes along each milk carton’s side. Place the boxes on a plastic tray. This tray protects whatever surface use for your mushrooms from rot.

    • 3

Remove the now-cooked dry material from the microwave. Allow everything to cool to room temperature. Mix oyster mushroom spores into the substrate.

    • 4

Transfer the sawdust, coffee ground and spore mixture into the milk carton containers. Pack the substrate tightly into the prepared cartons. Place the cartons and tray into a cabinet, storage locker or windowless room.

    • 5

Cover the tray with plastic and spray an oil-based cooking spray around the plastic covering and along the tray. The oil thwarts or trap insect pests.

    • 6

Remove the plastic covering every few days and water the mushroom substrate. Keep the mix moist, promoting growth. Wait several weeks before the fungi fruits. Once they do, carefully twist them out, avoiding breakage
