How to Germinate Orchid Seeds In Flasks

Orchids, or Orchidaceae, are flowering plants that thrive in tundras, tropics and indoor locations. Germinating your orchid seeds in flasks provides them with a controlled environment that protects them from possible damage while generating a greenhouse-like environment that helps them thrive. A type of growing medium called agar will provide the nutrients your orchid seeds require to grow.

Things You'll Need

  • Water
  • Pot
  • Metal tongs
  • Flask
  • Agar solution
  • Funnel
  • Chopsticks, wooden dowels or long tweezers
  • Cellophane or a clear lid

Instructions

    • 1

Boil water in a pan. Place your flask into the boiling water, using metal tongs, to sterilize it. Allow the flask to boil for five minutes. Remove the flask and set it in a dry area to cool.

    • 2

Pour agar solution in the sterilized flask. Use a funnel to ensure the solution does not splash up the sides of the flash. Pour one-eighth to one-quarter inch of solution into the flask.

    • 3

Place the orchid seeds into the flask with chopsticks, wooden dowels or long tweezers. Position the seeds on top of the agar solution so that they rest on the surface. Do not submerge the orchid seeds in the solution. Put the flask in a well-lit area, but avoid placing the flask in direct sunlight.

    • 4

Place cellophane or a clear lid over the opening of the flask to generate a greenhouse effect. Do not place an airtight seal over the flask opening, as that would prevent the air circulation needed for the orchid seeds to thrive.

    • 5

Wrap the flask in numerous sheets of newspaper or an old towel once the seeds grow leaves and furry roots. Tap the wrapped flask against a hard surface, like a table, until the flask breaks. Set the flask on a surface and unwrap it. Remove the orchid plants carefully and transplant them to pots.
