How to Build a Waterproof Box

Boating can be a fun way to spend a summer vacation until the unexpected happens and water ruins vital supplies and shorts out electronics. Build a waterproof box that custom fits the space available in your watercraft to ward off water catastrophes. Store survivor rations, a flare gun, matches, flashlight and a first aid kit. Use a heavy wood that will float, even when the box is full. Your supplies are less than useful if the box sinks to the bottom of the lake.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the space where you plan to store the box with a ruler. Keep it out of the way of foot traffic. Cut the pine wood with a saw into the proper dimensions. No fancy cuts are needed. Make sure the ends butt evenly against one another. Sand with sandpaper.

    • 2

Coat all sides of the wood with epoxy in a well-ventilated area. Let dry on one side before coating the second side. Wear gloves and a respirator.

    • 3

Assemble the box using the urethane construction adhesive to hold pieces together. Re-enforce with screws and a drill. Apply the adhesive over the installed screws as well.

    • 4

Stick the rubber seal or waterproofing to the rim of the lid and the top of the box using the adhesive. Let dry. Apply the adhesive evenly and thick enough to establish a waterproof seal.

    • 5

Install the hardware, such as hinges and a latch, and make sure the latch holds the lid tight against the top of the box.

    • 6

Coat the box with two to three layers of epoxy on the interior and exterior using a paintbrush. Make sure to keep the hinges clear of the epoxy or you will glue your box shut.

    • 7

Submerge the finished, empty box in water to make sure you have created a good waterproof design. Note where water leaks and repair until you are satisfied with the results.
