How to Care for Forced Blooms on a Narcissus Plant

A narcissus plant, more commonly known as a daffodil, brings a touch of spring into your home any time of year through forcing. This process encourages a bulb to grow indoors in a pot instead of outside, as the weather warms up naturally. Caring for a forced narcissus plant is simple, but requires care ensuring longevity.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a pot at least 12 inches deep and 8 to 10 inches wide. Placing a layer of pebbles at the pot’s bottom allows good drainage for the roots. A good root system leads to a healthier plant.

    • 2

Fill the pot loosely with regular potting soil, leaving an inch or so of rim around the edges. Place the bulb in the soil with the nose, or pointed end, exposed.

    • 3

Keep the soil moist, but do not overwater it. Place the plant in constant direct sunlight with an approximate temperature of 60 degrees Fahrenheit for three to five weeks until the bulb fully blooms.

    • 4

Move the plant to a cool location out of direct sunlight once the blooms are fully open. The blooms last longer the container moves to a cooler location at night, such as outside or the garage.

    • 5

Pinching faded blooms from the stalk as they die allows new ones to develop and open. Check the soil daily to make sure it is moist.
