How to Transplant Carrot Tops

The fern-like foliage that forms the above ground portion of a carrot plant makes an attractive houseplant. After you cut the top from a mature carrot, it will not form an edible root that you can eat. Any type of carrot will suffice, whether it’s from your own garden or the supermarket, but those without green foliage work best for this exercise. Transplanting carrot tops to pots is an educational activity for children that will teach them how plants produce foliage.

Instructions

    • 1

Snip off the foliage from the top of a mature carrot and slice off about 2 inches of the orange root.

    • 2

Place about 1 inch of sand or small pebbles in a shallow bowl or small pot with no drainage hole.

    • 3

Push each carrot top into your bowl or pot until it is about 1 inch deep in the sand or pebbles. You might want to dig a shallow hole with a spoon before you insert your carrot top.

    • 4

Add warm water to your bowl or pot, filling it to the top of the level of the sand or pebbles. Keep the water at this level for best results.

    • 5

Keep your transplanted carrot tops in a sunny area indoors and watch for the greenery to begin emerging from the top of each carrot.
