How to Grow a Chia Seed in a Cup

Chia seeds are a source of food, being eaten both raw and parched. According to Purdue University, chia seeds are even mixed in orange juice and consumed to control excess weight. In addition to being edible, chia seed oils can be extracted and used as an overgloss on paintings. Individuals can grow their own chia seeds in a plastic cup.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 1/4 cup of water in a plastic cup.

    • 2

Add 2 teaspoons of chia seeds to the water in the cup. Wait 15 to 20 minutes and then stir the seeds. Set aside for 24 hours.

    • 3

Fill a second plastic cup almost to the top with a sterilized soil that has some peat moss mixed into it. Water the soil until it is damp, but not soaking wet.

    • 4

Spread the softened chia seeds over the top of the sterilized soil.

    • 5

Set the plastic cup on a window sill that receives direct sunlight. Water just enough to keep the soil moist.

    • 6

Cover the cup with a plastic freezer bag so that it looks like the cup is being covered by a tent.

    • 7

Remove the plastic freezer bag once the chia seeds have sprouted. This usually occurs by day five.

    • 8

Keep the plastic cup in the path of the sun, and keep the soil within the cup moist as the seeds grow and mature.

    • 9

Harvest the chia seeds once the leaves are green and completely open.
