How to Hang a Golden Pothos Plant With Long Vines

Golden pothos thrives in a range of light conditions, including the low-light conditions found in homes, making this plant a good choice for the home environment. Any area that receives enough natural light for you to read a book comfortably provides enough light for pothos to thrive. However, when light is inhibited, the characteristic golden variegation in golden pothos may fade, leaving your pothos with solid green leaves. Moving it to more light improves its appearance.

Evaluate the amount of light in the area. If you choose to hang your golden pothos near a window, choose one with sheers to filter the light. A northern or eastern window may be fine without filtering, but southern and western windows may receive too much light for your golden pothos.

Select a plant pot designed for hanging. These are equipped with wire or plastic supports that attach to the rim of the pot and hook over an installed plant hook. Alternately, use a macrame or beaded hanger that slips over the pot and attaches to a plant hook. The type you use depends on your personal taste, as both provide an effective hanger for your plant.

Check the plant hook to ensure that it will support the weight of your plant. Pothos generally require a 12-inch pot when they are mature. The weight of the soil and plant, particularly when the soil is wet, must be supported by the hook. Secure the plant hook to a solid surface, such as anchored to a solid wall or suspended from ceiling beams, before hanging pothos.

Measure the length of the vines and adjust the height of the hanging plant to allow vines to hang freely. A full-length window or sliding door can accommodate vines up to 5 to 6 feet in length. If necessary, trim the vines to the desired length. Trimming forces new foliage along the vine and often improves the appearance of the plant.
