Grasses to Grow for Table Decorations

Growing ornamental grasses in attractive pots and containers on tables in your home gives you a long lasting natural display for your table in lieu of cut flowers, which usually fade in a matter of days. The Colorado State University Extension notes that grasses are easy to take care of, highly adaptable and they can often tolerate poor soil better than other plants.
  1. Bamboo

    • The more than 1,200 members of the subfamily Bambusoideae are more commonly known as "bamboo," and many varieties of these forest grasses are excellent choices to grow as table decorations. Size, color, growth rates and care requirements should be taken into consideration when choosing which bamboo plants to grow as table decor. Susanne Lucas of the American Bamboo Society mentions the bamboo species Raddia brasiliensis, Indocalamus tessellatus, Bambusa multiplex ‘Golden Goddess’ and Pleioblastus shibuyanus ‘Tsuboi’ as smaller specimens often cultivated indoors. Many of these smaller specimens can reach up to 3 feet, so they work best as centerpiece decorations.

    Lemon Grass

    • Lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus) is an easy-to-grow, clump-forming perennial that is also visually appealing, so it will look great as a table decoration. This tropical grass is grown for its pleasant, lemon-like aroma and the flavor it adds to meals when used freshly cut. White Flower Farm notes that lemon grass grown in containers requires at least six hours of full sun each day, regular waterings and a balanced (20-20-20) fertilizer applied every two weeks from April through September.

    Blue Fescue

    • "Birds & Blooms" notes blue fescue (Festuca glauca) is an attractive decorative grass that grows between 6 inches and 1 foot in height, so it would make a good choice for a centerpiece grass. This ornamental grass grows well in containers and features compact tufts of long, thin blades that are bright blue or bluish-green in color. Blue fescue benefits from dry, well-draining soil and it tolerates full sun to light shade.

    Wheatgrass

    • Wheatgrass is a fast-growing ornamental grass to grow as table decor, as it can be grown from seed in as little as three weeks. This attractive, bright-green grass species looks great when grown on table tops in terra cotta pots, short steel basins and other small containers. Wheatgrass requires regular waterings and intermediate feedings to encourage continuous growth.
