How to Feed a Potted Asparagus Fern

Asparagus fern (Asparagus densiflorus) isn't a fern at all, but an herbaceous perennial plant that's related to the asparagus vegetable. The asparagus plant is named for its arching, feathery and fern-like green foliage. Asparagus fern's graceful growing form and simple care requirements make it well-suited for indoor container cultivation. The plants appreciate filtered indoor sunlight, evenly moist potting soil and typical household temperatures. Feed an asparagus fern houseplant with regular applications of fertilizer to promote vigorous growth.

Instructions

    • 1

Feed your potted asparagus fern with a balanced, water-soluble houseplant fertilizer to ensure that it receives the nutrients necessary for healthy growth.

    • 2

Consult the rate instructions on the fertilizer packaging. Mix half of the recommended amount of fertilizer into the indicated amount of water to create a weak fertilizer solution. Use room-temperature spring or bottled water, or allow tap water to stand for 24 hours before use to let unwanted chemicals dissipate.

    • 3

Pour the half-strength fertilizer solution over the surface of the potting soil rather than pouring it over the plant itself. Wait 10 to 15 minutes to let the soil absorb as much of the fertilizer solution as possible while allowing the excess solution to drain free of the pot. Discard any fertilizer solution that collects in the drainage tray under the pot.

    • 4

Apply a half-strength solution of fertilizer once a week from spring through fall while the asparagus fern is actively producing new growth.

    • 5

Reduce the frequency of fertilization to once every two weeks during the winter months when the asparagus fern is in its resting period.
