How to Care for a Hoya Snow Cap

Hoya is the genus and common name for a large group of succulent shrubs and vines sometimes grown as houseplants. Numerous cultivars of hoyas have been developed, including one with variegated foliage and creamy-white flowers called Snow Caps. Like all varieties of hoya, Snow Caps grows effortlessly and requires little care once established in a pot or basket. However, it must be provided with warmth, light watering and very bright, filtered light to look its best year-round.

Instructions

    • 1

Pot Hoya Snow Caps in a hanging pot or basket. Use potting soil that contains a small amount of perlite to improve the moisture retention of the soil.

    • 2

Position Hoya Snow Caps near a large window with very bright, filtered or indirect light. Avoid placing the plant in direct sun or heavy shade since both will negatively affect the plant and diminish its striking foliage variegation.

    • 3

Water Hoya Snow Caps plants only when the top third of the soil in the pot dries out. Water until the top 3 to 4 inches of soil are moderately moist. Decrease water in winter to 1 inch every 10 to 15 days.

    • 4

Trim off any leaves that become shriveled, discolored or damaged. Snip off the leaf where it attaches to the stem using pruning shears. Be careful of the watery, whitish sap inside the leaves and stems since it will stain fabric.

    • 5

Watch for signs of mealy bug infestations such as cottony matter under the leaves. Treat the infestation by spraying the plant liberally with insecticidal soap twice a week for three weeks.
