Growing Succulents in Lava Rocks

Succulents require little soil and excellent drainage. Their fine root systems absorb moisture quickly and efficiently, and their fleshy stems and leaves store water. That characteristic allows succulents to withstand drought conditions in their natural habitat. Airy lava rocks are ideal porous containers for planting a wide variety of sun-loving succulents.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the lava rocks to remove soil, other debris and contaminants that could negatively affect succulents' growth. Wash them well in a bucket or tub using a scrub brush and biodegradable organic soap. Rinse the rocks well with clear water.

    • 2

Select succulents to grow in particular lava rocks based on the plants' size and growing habits. Choose lava rocks large enough to accommodate the size their specific succulent will be at maturity.

    • 3

Sprinkle a small amount of potting soil in a natural crevice, hollow or depression of a lava rock. Gently place a small succulent's roots on the soil, and add a bit of soil as needed to fill in around the base of the plant. Water thoroughly to settle the soil, and allow the lava rock to drain. Use the same procedure to plant each succulent in a lava rock.

When a planting larger succulent, use a hammer and chisel to chip out a shallow bowl or depression in the lava rocks. Make the depression large enough to accommodate the succulent's root system. Place potting soil in the depression to anchor the plant, and water it thoroughly.

Place the succulents in a full-sun location. They require as much light as possible. If you grow them indoors, place them on a south- or southeast-facing windowsill. Supplement insufficient natural light with artificial lighting. Allow the plants to dry out completely between each watering session. Succulents do not survive in constantly wet conditions.
