Caring for the Indoor Sedum Plant

Different species of sedum exist. Sedum morganianum, also know as burro's tail, is one adapted to container culture, preferably a hanging basket. The succulent develops with a trailing habit, its 3-foot-long strands of small leaves fat with moisture cascading over the pot’s rim. This Mexican species is winter-hardy in zones 9 to 11 of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Elsewhere, this flowering sedum thrives indoors with the proper care.
  1. Soil

    • Grow Sedum morganianum in a potting mix formulated for cacti. Like a cactus, a succulent plant retains water in its tissues. To prevent moisture saturation, this plant needs a growing medium that drains water quickly. Garden supply shops sell bagged cactus potting mixes. A homemade version would be a blend high in compost and sand with some potting soil, says Curtis W. Smith, Ph.D., an extension horticulture specialist with New Mexico State University. Help your Sedum morganianum stay dry by planting it in an unglazed ceramic pot, which doesn't allow a lot of water to sit around the roots because it is porous.

    Irrigation

    • Water the plant whenever the top one-fourth of the soil becomes dry. You are likely to irrigate it more often in the summer months and less frequently in the winter. Pour water into the pot until it begins to drip out of the drainage holes.

    Light

    • Your indoor Sedum morganianum needs bright light all day, but strong direct sun can be detrimental. If your light source comes from the west, place the burro's tail to the side of the window or filter the sun with sheer curtains. If you have southern exposure, place the basket directly in front of the window.

    Nutrition

    • Select a liquid houseplant fertilizer that contains nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Apply it monthly during the growing season at the rate listed on the manufacturer’s label. During fall and winter, feed the plant once each season.

    Temperature

    • Sedum morganianum is adapted to average indoor temperatures during the day. At night, take care not to expose the plant to an environment below 50 F. You may have to move it away from windows in the winter, depending on how cold it gets. In the morning, hang the basket by the light again.

    Handling

    • The long strands of Sedum morganianum break off easily. Hang the basket in an area where you are not likely to brush against the plant. Grow it in a container with a rolled rim, because a thin, sharp edge might cut through the stems.
