Select a container. Opaque containers generally work best to keep fungus from developing around the roots. Choose a new container that is slightly larger than the root area of the lucky bamboo plant, to give the roots room to grow.
Pour enough pebbles into the bottom of the container for the Dracaena sanderiana's roots to lie on them without touching the bottom of the container.
Take the plant out of its original container. Wash the roots clear of the old water, and set the plant in the center of the new container so that the roots fan out from the base of the plant over the pebbles. Dribble more pebbles into the container to cover the roots and hold the stems upright. Add water to the container until the roots are covered.
Fertilize every two months with a water-soluble mix formulated for hydroponic plants. Add fertilizer when you change the plant's water.
Choose a container 1 to 2 inches larger than the Dracaena's current container. Make sure the new container has drainage channels or holes to let excess water drain out of the pot. Dracaenas like moist but not wet soil.
Pour about 2 inches of potting soil or other growing medium into the new container. Choose a product that offers both good drainage and good moisture retention. Water thoroughly.
Remove the Dracaena sanderiana from its current container. Use your fingers to untangle the roots, if necessary, and place the plant in the center of the new container. Fan out the roots on all sides.
Pour potting soil into the container until the pot is filled to within an inch of the container's rim. Water the plant thoroughly and add more potting soil, if needed. Spread mulch or decorative pebbles around the surface of the pot to help retain moisture.
Place the plant in a spot that receives good light. Dracaena sanderiana plants need about four hours of direct or bright indirect light. Fertilize Dracaena sanderiana plants monthly during spring and summer, then cut back on feeding for the winter.
