Types of Herbal Vaporizers

Herbal vaporizers are a cleaner alternative to smoking because they allow a user to avoid byproducts like tar and carbon monoxide, which are contained in smoke. Vaporizers work by heating the herb's essential oils, which is where the active ingredients are, but not enough to actually burn the plant material. Accordingly, herbal vaporizers allow the avoidance of harmful smoke byproducts while utilizing the herb's active ingredients more efficiently.
  1. Conduction Vaporizers

    • Conduction vaporizers work when something hot comes in contact with the herb's surface. This vaporizing method is not the most effective because a portion of the herb doesn't get hot enough to release the active ingredients. Alternatively, the temperature on the heating element is raised to heat the rest of the herb, but the herb that is in contact with the heating element risks combustion, making the vaporizer pointless.

    Convection Vaporizers

    • Convection vaporizers are more productive because they allow for full, even heating of the herb. Air is heated through a ceramic heating element that is controlled by a thermostat. The heated air passes to the herb and vaporizes the active ingredients.

    Balloon Style Vaporizers

    • The balloon style vaporizer is an electronic device that uses the convection method, and when switched on and filled with herbs, starts to produce vapor. A constant flow of hot air in the heating chamber allows for a steady temperature and air flow speed that creates the perfect conditions for vaporizing the herb's essential oils. After the balloon-type chamber is full, the vapor is inhaled.

    Direct Inhale Vaporizers

    • Direct inhale vaporizers produce the purest vapor, because the vapor is inhaled as soon as it is made. More precise concentration is required to find the right temperature and inhale speed combination. A person who inhales slowly needs less heat because the air is in contact with the herb longer, whereas a person who takes short puffs needs more heat because the hot air makes less contact with the herbs.

    Portable Vaporizers

    • Portable vaporizer pipes use a rechargeable battery and are hand held so it is able to be taken anywhere. These vaporizers have bowls attached, which is where the herb goes. Switch the vaporizer on and when the glass dome fills with vapor, inhale through the attached hose or other inhalation device.
