Select a location your garden that receives direct sunlight during the day. Dill can tolerate partial shade, but should have at least six hours of sunlight per day. Plan on planting your dill seeds in early spring, about a week before the last frost.
Sow the dill seeds 1/4 inch deep into the soil. Place a seed every few inches to begin, you will thin the plants later. Space the rows 18 to 24 inches apart. Gently rake soil over the seeds once they are in the ground. The seeds should germinate and poke through the soil in 10 to 14 days.
Lightly water the seeds once they are in the soil.
Wait four weeks before thinning the dill plants. Thin the dill plants so you have one plant every 12 to 18 inches.
Remove any weeds that spring up amongst the dill plants. Weeds will compete with the dill weed for moisture and nutrients in the soil, and will weaken your plants. Pull any weeds out of the soil, taking care to remove the entire root system.
Water the dill so the soil stays moist, but do not over-saturate the soil. Over-watering can cause root rot in the young plants.
Harvest the leaves of the plants once there are four or five mature leaves present. You can also wait longer to harvest entire branches or stalks of dill. Snap the branches of, or use scissors or pruning shears to cleaning cut them free.
