How to Prune Oregano in the Winter

Oregano spices up many dishes, and the herb is particularly appropriate for use in sauces and soups. Oregano is a hardy perennial herb and will overwinter well in many locations. While regular pruning is called for in spring, summer and fall, care must be taken in the frequency and extent of pruning in the winter.

Instructions

    • 1

Mulch around the base of your oregano plant at the beginning of the winter season.

    • 2

Determine your oregano needs -- limit pruning to only the amount you need to use in the winter. Excessive pruning will cause too much easily damaged new growth.

    • 3

Select small new branches and shoots for trimming. Cut these back with scissors or light shears to no more than half their length.
