What Is Pulsatilla Nigricans?

Pulsatilla nigrican is an herbal remedy that comes from the plant commonly referred to as the meadow anemone or wind flower. These wild perennial flowers grow primarily in south England and northern and central Europe. This plant has been used for a wide variety of medical purposes for many years.
  1. History

    • The use of pulsatilla nigricans for medical purposes dates back as far as ancient times. In the 19th century, Samuel Hahnemann, who was known as the father of homeopathy, had a strong influence on other physicians which lead them to promote the use of pulsatilla nigricans as well.

    Ingredients

    • The ingredients in the plant from which pulsatilla nigricans are derived give this homeopathic remedy antibacterial and antispasmodic properties. Among these ingredients are tannins, anemone camphor and lactones. Because of the strength and acidity of these ingredients it may cause a burning sensation if it comes into contact with the skin.

    Uses

    • During ancient times, pulsatilla nigricans was used for ulcers and inflammation in the eyes. In the 19th century it was commonly used for disorders of the nervous system and abnormal swelling in the knees. It is not used as frequently now, but still may provide relief from headaches, menstrual pain, boils and insomnia.

    Uses for Animals

    • Though the benefit of using pulsatilla nigricans in all animals has not been proven, one case shows that it may have helped increase the fertility in a prize Nelore bull. At a farm known as Millenium Farm in Maracaju, Brazil, testing was done to see if this homeopathic medicine might have a positive effect on promoting fertility in a bull that was infertile for a three-year period. When the bull was administered pulsatilla negricans the condition seemed to have reversed. However, once the treatment had stopped, the improvement in fertility declined. When treatments began again, the fertility of the bull improved once again.
