How to Make Fireweed Honey

There are two types of fireweed honey: one that bees make, and one which you can make. Fireweed has bright purple flowers, but the leaves are most often used for infusions. Infusing fireweed in honey creates herbal honey that can be used both internally and externally for helping with coughs and irritated mucous membranes, as well as an ointment for skin irritations. Fireweed honey can be made with both dried and fresh fireweed.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash fresh fireweed and leave to air dry for an hour or two. Chop the fresh fireweed leaves and fill a jar with them, packed down quite tightly. Fill a jar three quarters full if you are using crushed dried leaves.

    • 2

Pour raw honey over the leaves, filling the jar right to the top to cover the fireweed leaves.

    • 3

Place the jar on a windowsill in the kitchen. Turn the jar daily to agitate the herb and honey mixture. Do this for two weeks, then transfer the jar to a cool, dark place. The fireweed-infused honey can be used right away, and will improve in potency over time.

Label the jar with the type of herb used and the date manufactured.
