Oil of Oregano for Mold in Plants

Many plants suffer from fungal attacks (mold) that weaken or even kill them. Oregano oil, long-touted for its anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties, was tested by several food and plant researchers to determine its efficacy.
  1. Testing with Oregano Oils

    • Notable tests of oregano oil and its anti-fungal properties include Mustafa Kemal University in 2010 observing its efficacy against the tomato grey mould disease; peach leaf curl disease in a patent designed to treat the disease in 2005; and Aspergillus fungal species (a disease that grows on improperly stored food) in a study conducted by the Hassan II Institute for Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine in 1994.

    Efficacy

    • In all of these studies, oregano oil was either the most effective essential oil or among the most effective at inhibiting the initial infection or spread of the mold diseases. In the case of tomato grey mould and peach leaf curl, applications of oregano oil can even save current year crops from infected plants.

    Benefits

    • Many fungal problems in plants go unnoticed for long periods of time. The fact that oregano oil may be used even after the disease progresses means a greater chance of saving plants and crops. The fact that oregano oil is a biological agent and completely biodegradable means that it is safer to use in the garden and on food plants.
