How to Weave Lavender

Weaving ribbon around a bunch of lavender stalks to make a wand is an old-fashioned craft that has been used for generations to sweeten dresser drawers and act as a room freshener. These wands are easy to make, and last for years once they've dried. Try them as a scout or other group project, or make a bunch to give as gifts or sell at a bazaar.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Pick an odd number, between 7 and 17, of equally sized lavender stalks. The stalks should be as long as possible and have flowers. Gather all the stalks together with the flower heads even, and tie a thread or piece of string just under the flower heads.

    • 2

Bend each stalk just under the thread or string, over the flower heads. Once you are done, the flower heads will be trapped in a cage made of stalks. Tie a piece of quarter-inch ribbon to one stalk, just under the bend.

    • 3

Weave the ribbon through the stalks, around and around until you reach the bottom of the flower heads. The ribbon should hold the stalks together close to the flower heads. When you reach the bottom of the flower heads, wrap the ribbon around the stalks as a whole, forming a single stem. Stop after 6 inches. Tie the end of the ribbon around the final wrap.

Trim the ribbon, leaving enough of an end to tuck under the rest of the ribbon. Trim the bottom of the lavender stems 2 inches below the ribbon, at an angle. Allow the resulting lavender wand to dry completely before using it to scent a dresser drawer.
