How to Grow Watercress in Your House

Watercress is a trailing perennial that is commonly found on stream banks or in other spots with wet soil near running water. The water requirements of the plant make it less common for indoor gardeners, but the water does not actually need to be moving for the watercress to thrive. You can grow it indoors in a clay pot that sits in water. The pot will absorb the moisture, and you can regularly refresh the water so it does not stagnate.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour a 1-inch layer of gravel into the bottom of a clay plant pot that has drainage holes. This will prevent the soil from running out of the holes. Fill the pot the rest of the way with a mixture of 2 parts potting soil and 1 part compost.

    • 2

Plant the watercress seed 1/4 inch deep in the soil. If you have a large pot, plant one seed every 4 inches across the pot's width.

    • 3

Water until the soil settles and liquid comes out of the drainage holes. Fill a tray with water and set the clay pot on the tray.

    • 4

Put the tray and pot in a sunny window that is shaded in the afternoon. Empty the tray and refill it with clean water every other day. When the stems are 6 inches long, harvest them by cutting them off at the soil level with scissors.
