Information on the English Lavender Plant

English lavender is a perennial herb found in many gardens. The small, fragrant blooms appear in late spring or summer and are used in potpourri, perfumes, essential oils, toiletries and foods.

    • The botanical name for English lavender is Lavandula angustifolia. It is a member of the Lamiaceae (Mint) family.

    Geography

    • English lavender grows best in hardiness zones 5 to 9.

    Size

    • This plant will grow 1 to 1.5 feet tall and 1.5 to 2' wide, forming a mound.

    Exposure

    • English lavender needs full sun. In hotter regions, some shade in the afternoon will help.

    Soil and Water Needs

    • English lavender needs soil that will drain well and is not too acidic. It can tolerate drought once the roots are established but will bloom better if watered. The soil should be allowed to dry out between waterings.

    Flowers

    • Small clusters of purple, violet or white flowers grow on long stems. The flowers are very attractive to bees and butterflies.
