How to Clean an Herb Grinder

Herb grinders are used to grind up herbs and spices to add to foods. They come in a variety of sizes and are very easy to use. Herb grinders have a top that screws onto a base. There is usually a contraption under the base that catches the ground-up herbs. The base is equipped with sharp teeth that are aligned so that when the top and base are turned, the herbs are ground up. Some grinders even have a fourth piece on the very bottom that has a screen to collect the tiniest particles from the herbs. Over time, herb grinders can become clogged with herbs and spices. Cleaning an herb grinder will help it function properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Take apart the herb grinder by unscrewing and separating all of the pieces. Empty out the very bottom portion of the grinder that collects the tiny particles from the herbs if your grinder is equipped with this piece.

    • 2

Use a toothbrush to dry brush each of the pieces. Do this over a trash can to control the mess from the herbs.

    • 3

Fill a container, large enough to hold the herb grinder, with isopropyl alcohol. Be sure the alcohol has a concentration of 90% or higher. Do not use PVC or plastic containers, as they can release dangerous chemicals when exposed to alcohol.

    • 4

Place each piece of the herb grinder into the container of alcohol. Allow the pieces to soak for 5 to 10 minutes.

    • 5

Use a cotton swab to clean the crevices of each piece of the herb grinder. Use a toothbrush to brush the screen on the bottom portion of the grinder.

    • 6

Rinse each part of the herb grinder under hot tap water. Lay the parts on a clean towel.

    • 7

Blot the pieces dry with a towel, and then allow them to air dry completely before reassembling the herb grinder.
