How to Harvest Lavender Seeds

Lavender is easily recognizable by its long stems full of fragrant, purple flowers. This herb has been used for hundreds of years for culinary, medicinal and other at-home purposes. Lavender is often added to potpourri, soaps, lotions and shampoos because of its bold, floral aroma. Since lavender has so many uses, it is a popular herb for home growers. Seeds can be bought for a relatively low price and can be harvested directly from a lavender plant.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the lavender above the brown area of the stem shortly after the flowers begin to bloom. Cutting on the brown area of the lavender will prohibit regrowth from that particular plant.

    • 2

Tie a bushel of lavender stems together. Make sure the bare stems are facing in the same direction.

    • 3

Put the bushel, stem side up, in a paper bag and tie it shut. It is okay if the stems stick out of the top of the bag. Store the bag in a dry place for two weeks.

    • 4

Check the lavender after two weeks to make sure it is dry. Run your fingers firmly down the stem of each plant to remove the flowers and the seeds if the flowers are dry. Discard the stems after removing the flowers and seeds.

    • 5

Put the seeds in a glass jar and store them in a dry, dark place.

    • 6

Dump the contents of the paper bag onto a flat surface. Sort the flowers from the seeds.
