Instructions

    • 1

Purchase your seeds from a reputable seed company such as Burpee. Each packet will have instructions for caring for that individual herb or spice. There are several basic herbs and spices that you can find including rosemary, thyme, basil and oregano.

    • 2

Follow the planting instructions on the packet using either a cleared area of a flowerbed or garden or pots and planters. With pots or planters you can easily move the herbs and spices indoors if you need to, or simply grow them indoors. Seeds should always be planted in nutrient-rich potting soil or topsoil that has been amended with compost or compost tea.

    • 3

Water as directed and wait for the seeds to sprout. While some herbs and spices require full sun or partial shade, all plants need some sunlight to grow so whether you plant indoors or out make sure that your new herb and spice plants can get sunlight for a few hours each day.

Prune plants as needed to control growth or to use your herbs and spices. There is nothing quite like making spaghetti sauce and being able to just reach over and pinch off fresh basil or oregano to flavor it.
