Why Are My Aloe Vera Plant Leaves Breaking?

Aloe plants require little care to keep them healthy and happy. When they are not properly cared for, the leaves become weak and break easily, particularly in young or larger plants.
  1. Soil Conditions

    • Over-watering or under-watering the soil causes aloe leaves to break.

Over-watering an aloe plant leads to plant rot, whereas under-watering causes the leaves to dry out. Both conditions cause the aloe leaves to wilt or break off.

    Plant Size

    • Aloe leaves break when the leaves are too heavy for the base.

Indoor plants often stop growing when they reach the maximum size for the container they are grown in. When the plant's leaves grow too large for the base, the leaves become heavy and break easily. Replant the aloe in a larger container to allow room for the base to grow.

    Pets and Kids

    • Cats sleeping in or playing with aloe plants can break the plants leaves.

Consider the location of the aloe plant and its susceptibility to children and household pets. Children playing with the leaves or cats that find the aloe plant to be a suitable bed easily damage the plant's leaves.
