What is a Centella Asiatica?

Centella asiatica, also known as Asiatic coinwort or gotu cola, is native to the swamps and marshes of China and India but grows wild in many areas around the world. This herb is important in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine.
  1. Identification

    • Centella asiatica plants are creeping herbs with runners that lie on the ground. The herb's shovel-shaped leaves are approximately 1 inch long with scalloped edges and grow in alternating clusters along the stem nodes. The plant produces small pinkish-white or greenish flowers in dense clusters during the summer.

    Growing Conditions

    • Centella asiatica thrives in USDA hardiness zones 7 to 11. This wetland plant is useful around the edges of water features. It grows best in full sun and damp soil. Centella asiatica propagates by creating new plants on its above-ground runners.

    Benefits

    • The above-ground parts of the Centella asiatica plant are used to improve memory and treat mental disorders. It is also used as a remedy for anxiety and depression. WebMD states that the herb has chemicals that increase collagen production, lower blood pressure in the veins and reduce swelling.
