What is Astragalus Root Extract?

Astragalus root extract is also known as milk vetch or huang qi. It has been an important component in Chinese medicine for centuries. The herb is used to treat a number of different medical conditions.
  1. Features

    • Astragalus root is an adaptogen, which means that it helps protect the body against physical and emotional stress as well as from disease. The herb contains anti-inflammatory properties that make it useful as a topical treatment for skin injuries. It stimulates the immune system and helps prevent colds and infections. It may also improve the symptoms of heart disease.

    Dosing

    • The recommended dosage varies depending upon the herb's preparation. The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) recommends a dosage of 250 to 500 mg of astragalus root extract three or four times a day if the herb is in standardized extract form. UMMC advises patients use 500 to 1000 mg a day of powdered root three or four times a day, or add 3 to 6 g of dried root to 12 oz. of water to create a strong boiled tea. Drink three servings of tea a day for maximum benefits.

    Warning

    • Pregnant women and nursing mothers should not use astragalus root. People who have immune system disorders such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis or multiple sclerosis should avoid the herb because it affects the immune system. People who are taking immunosuppressant drugs should also not use astragalus.
