Juniper Berry Identification

The juniper berry is the seed of the juniper shrub, commonly found in North America. In recent years, it has grown in popularity for both medicinal and culinary uses.

    • The juniper berry is a small round berry that is white in appearance when it first develops. Over time, the berry will begin to look more scaly; its color will change to dark purple as it matures. Complete maturation can take up to a year.

    Size

    • The juniper berry is approximately 12 mm, or about 1/2 inch, in diameter. It can be much smaller as the berries are growing on the shrub.

    Features

    • The juniper berry has a very strong, earthy taste. If you are familiar with the taste of gin, the juniper berry often creates the primary flavor profile in this alcohol. Because of its strong flavor, it is often used for seasoning wild game.
