How to Gather Stevia Seeds

Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) is a tropical herb native to Paraguay and Brazil. Stevia is primarily grown for its sweet leaves which are manufactured into a sugar substitute. Stevia is most commonly cultivated from cuttings but can also be started from gathered seed. Stevia seeds ripen between the first week in December and the last week in January. Plants are generally harvested two to three times during that period to collect all of the ripe seeds.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the container underneath the stevia plant.

    • 2

Shake the stevia plant gently. Any ripe black or tan seeds will fall into the container.

    • 3

Remove only the black seeds from the container for planting. According to a 1999 study conducted by the University of Purdue, tan stevia seed is likely to be nonviable.

    • 4

Revisit the plants in four weeks and repeat Steps 1 through 3.

    • 5

Visit the plants a third and final time in four weeks. Cut any branches that still hold seed. Shake them vigorously over the container to loosen any remaining viable seed.
