How to Prepare Ginger Root Tonic

In many countries and cultures, ginger root has been used for centuries as a remedy for upset stomach and stomach pains. Ginger's natural properties help stimulate the mucus membranes in the stomach and produce more stomach acid to make digestion easier. Ginger often is used as a tonic for those experiencing nausea, particularly in the form of carbonated ginger ale for children suffering from the flu. Ginger as a tonic can be taken in many forms; as a soothing tea, an herbal tonic or as an alcoholic cocktail.

Instructions

  1. Ginger Tea

    • 1

Wash and peel a fresh ginger root. Using a small blade grater, grate approximately 1 tbsp. worth of ginger.

    • 2

Bring a kettle of water to boil. Pour 8 oz. of boiling water in a heat-proof measuring cup. Add the grated ginger and stir. Let the ginger steep for about 10 minutes.

    • 3

Strain the liquid through a small mesh strainer positioned above a teacup. Discard the ginger pieces and reheat in the microwave if necessary. Use either honey or sugar to sweeten the tea.

    Nausea Tonic

    • 4

Bring a tea kettle full of at least 3 cups water to boil. Once boiled, pour 2 cups into a heat-proof measuring cup.

    • 5

Add 1 tbsp. chopped lemongrass or 1 tsp. dried lemongrass, 1 tbsp. freshly grated ginger or 1/8 tsp. ground ginger, plus 1 tsp. chamomile flowers or a chamomile teabag. Allow the concoction to steep for at least 15 minutes.

    • 6

Strain tonic through a mesh strainer positioned over a bowl. Take 1/2 cup of tonic per day to help relieve nausea. To dilute the solution for taste, mix 1/2 cup tonic plus 1/4 to 1/2 cup warm water.

    Gin Gin Cocktail

    • 7

Fill half of a cocktail glass or tumbler with ice.

    • 8

Measure one part gin and three parts ginger ale. For a 1 cup cocktail, measure 1/4 cup gin and 3/4 cup ginger ale.

    • 9

Pour the gin over the ice, followed by the ginger ale, then add a lemon or lime wedge. Do not mix in a shaker, as the carbonation will cause pressure to build, and the drink will fizz out of the cup.
