Choose a sunny, well-drained location in the garden or landscape to grow an eyeball plant. Seeds may be started indoors in late winter. Plant seedlings or nursery-grown flowers in late spring after danger of frost.
Apply 1 to 2 inches of organic matter, like compost or leaf mold, on top of the soil and work it down to a depth of 8 to 10 inches.
Make an opening in the freshly tilled soil to fit the root ball of the potted eyeball plant so it will set slightly lower in the ground. Cover the top of the root ball with a thin layer of soil. If planting by seed, drop two to three seeds on the ground and then press them down to a depth of about one-quarter inch.
Place additional plants or seeds 10 to 12 inches apart.
Water around the root ball. If planting by seed, lightly mist the soil and keep the soil moist until the seedlings appear. Once the seedlings appear, pull the weaker sprouts.
Apply 1 to 2 inches of mulch, like leaf mold or compost, around the plants, keeping the mulch about 1 inch from the stem of the plant. Wait until seedlings are 1 to 2 inches tall before mulching.
Water every seven to 10 days if there is no rainfall. Water thoroughly so the soil is moist 6 inches down.
