How Much Ground Flaxseed Is Good for Daily Intake?

The flax plant produces flaxseed, which is sometimes ground for use as a dietary supplement. Flaxseed's health benefits stem from essential fatty acids and lignans, which are chemicals that have an estrogenlike effect on the body.

    • Before taking flaxseed, consult a nutritionist or other qualified health care professional. While flaxseed is generally safe, you should not take it if you are pregnant or undergoing hormone replacement therapy. It may also interfere with oral contraceptives, medication that thins blood and medication for diabetics. The University of Maryland Medical Center advises that you take flaxseed at least an hour before or two hours after taking other medications or supplements, since flaxseed can interfere with the body's ability to properly absorb them. It can also cause nausea, diarrhea, bloating, gas and other digestive problems.
