How to Purchase Stevia Seeds

Stevia rebaudiana is a perennial herb native to South America and available for purchase through most seed companies that offer herb seeds for sale, online, through mail order catalogs and in person. Once an almost unknown herb, Stevia is now grown and sold at seed and plant nurseries throughout North America and is used for a no-calorie sweetener.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a nursery or online seed supplier that sells Stevia herb seeds. Large seed companies like Seeds of Change, Johnny's Selected Seeds and Burpee offer Stevia seeds, as do small specialty companies.

    • 2

Purchase twice as many seeds as you think you'll need. According to Perdue University, Stevia seeds have a notoriously low germination rate. "Poor seed germination is one of the factors that limit large-scale cultivation. Shock (1982), Duke (1993), and Carneiro (1997) all mention poor production of viable seeds. Propagation is a special concern for northern growers who must grow stevia as an annual."

Select the amount of seed you'd like to buy. Because of their popularity, the cost of the seeds has gone down in recent years. A single packet containing 15 seeds from Burpee costs $4.95.

Select either black or tan Stevia seeds. Black seeds, according to Perdue University, weigh more than tan seeds and their viability (rate of germination) is much higher. When ordering online, by mail or by phone, you may have to contact the seller and ask which seeds you are getting, as not all catalog seed descriptions include the seeds' color.

Order your seeds. You can do this online, by mail, by phone or in person, depending on how you have chosen to purchase your seeds.
