How to Grow Parsley Indoors

Fresh grown parsley can be grown indoors all year round so that you always have parsley for salads and main dishes. A member of the carrot family, parsley (Petroselinium crispum) is native to the Mediterranean. Although seed germination is slow, the process can be hastened by taking an additional step in preparing the seeds for planting. Parsley can grow to heights of 8 to 14 inches.

Instructions

    • 1

Soak the parsley seeds overnight in warm water to soften the seed pod for 24 hours before you are ready to plant the seeds.

    • 2

Place the garden soil in the container with drainage holes up to 1 inch from the top of the container. Plant the seeds 1/8 inch deep in the soil.

    • 3

Water the soil and keep the soil moist while waiting two to five weeks for the seeds to germinate and start emerging from the soil. Seedlings look like grass blades. After the seedlings appear, thin out to two or three blades. Keep the soil moist at all times, but not soggy while growing parsley indoors.

    • 4

Place the container in a sunny window so that plant can get at least four to six hours of direct sunlight.

    • 5

Fertilize the indoor parsley with 5-10-5 (nitrogen-phosphate-potassium) fertilizer diluted in half every four to six weeks for indoor plants.

    • 6

Use a scissors to snip off parsley stalks at the ground to harvest, which is done about 14 weeks from seed to harvest. New growth will start after you start harvesting stalks. If you just cut off the tops, the plant will not be as productive with new growth as it will be when you cut the stalks.
