How to Store Flax Seeds

Ground or whole, flax seeds provide a healthy dose of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which fight high cholesterol and heart disease, according to the University of Maryland. Improper storage of ground flax seeds may promote spoilage, ruining the seeds before you can use them. Storing ground or whole flax seed correctly keeps the seeds fresh and from losing precious nutrients.

Instructions

  1. Whole Flax Seeds

    • 1

Lay paper towels on a kitchen counter. Spread the flax seeds in a single layer over the paper towels. Allow the flax seeds to remain on the paper towels for 1 hour to absorb any moisture from the seeds.

    • 2

Place the seeds into a clear or semi-clear airtight container. Fill the container to the top. Place the lid on the container and press out any excess air by lifting the edge of the lid up and back down again.

    • 3

Place the container in a cool, dark environment such as a pantry.

    Ground Flax Seed

    • 4

Pour ground flax seed into an airtight container. Fill to the rim.

    • 5

Secure the lid firmly on the container. Burp the container to release excess air.

    • 6

Place the container into the refrigerator or freezer for storage.
