Lobelia and Fenugreek

Lobelia and fenugreek are both herbs used in medical remedies by practitioners of alternative medicine. As with any herbal remedy, speak with your doctor to find out if lobelia and fenugreek are good for you before you begin treatment.
  1. History

    • Native Americans smoked lobelia, also known as Indian tobacco, to help alleviate symptoms of asthma, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. It has also been used to treat cough, pneumonia and bronchitis. Meanwhile, fenugreek, also known as Greek hayseed, has been used to treat stomach pain and topically for various skin conditions.

    Significance

    • According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, not enough studies have been done to prove lobelia's efficacy on humans or animals. Homeopathic doctors still recommend its use respiratory illness, to relax muscles and for smoking cessation. The FDA has not evaluated fenugreek for safety or efficacy but some alternative doctors recommend tinctures and teas for treatment.

    Warning

    • Lobelia has toxic properties and should be used in small doses, if at all. Fenugreek should not be used if you have diabetes or any blood or bleeding disorders.
