How to Make Potpourri for a Vegas Vacation

Anyone who has traveled to Las Vegas brings a lucky charm, wears their lucky socks or dons a lucky hat. Winning a little pocket money to bring home puts a smile on everybody's lips. So when it's time to head out for a vacation to the desert, take a small bag of lucky potpourri to beat the odds. Like a spell bag or good mojo pouch, the potpourri bag sits in a pocket to give a gambler great luck.

Things You'll Need

  • Large glass bowl
  • Wooden spoon
  • Large plastic, self-closing bag
  • 1/2 cup dried rose hips, ginger root, Irish moss, devil's shoestring, star anise and orange peel
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp. orris root fixative
  • 3 drops each of anise and orange essential oils
  • Copper penny
  • Cowrie shell
  • Small green cloth bag with tie

      Use dried flowers, herbs and orris root to make the best potpourri.

      Use the kitchen counter to combine the ingredients of the good luck potpourri. In a large glass bowl, add the dried rose hips, ginger root, Irish moss, devil's shoestring, star anise and orange peel. Toss the ingredients around with the wooden spoon. Sprinkle the cinnamon and orris root, then mix these powders into the potpourri with the wooden spoon. Try to keep the powder on the mix, not at the bottom of the bowl.

      Pour the mixture of potpourri into a large plastic bag. Place the copper penny and cowrie shell inside the bag. Add the two essential oils, anise and orange, then zip the bag closed. Shake the bag to distribute the oils, fixative and flowers until the entire contents appear coated. Leave the sealed bag in a cool, dry place and allow the essential oils to permeate the flowers. This can take a day or two, but the fragrance will be worth the time.

      Transfer the contents of the plastic bag into a green cloth bag with a tie around the neck to keep the potpourri inside. The color green is recognized for luck and will enhance the wearer's good fortune in Las Vegas. If you wear the potpourri bag in your pocket, inside a purse or attached to a belt around your waist, fortune will stay near. The fragrant herbal mix will remind the gambler of his good fortune. Remember to rub the bag on occasion for extra luck when needed most. The copper penny and cowrie shell will act as a lucky talisman for the entire trip.
