What Is Acacia Powder Derived From?

Acacia powder comes from the resin of Acacia senegal, or gum Arabic. The powder is dissolved in water to create a bonding agent used in commercial preparations.
  1. Acacia Plant

    • The acacia plant grows naturally in tropical areas of Central and South America, Asia, Africa and Australia. The plant grows to about 19 feet tall with pale green leaves and pale yellow balls of flowers.

    Uses

    • The dried resin of acacia is added to lotions and pharmaceutical products. Because of its bonding qualities, acacia is used in commercially manufactured confections and chewing gum.

    Benefits

    • Acacia has soothing properties and is beneficial for inflammations, according to authors Jessica Houdret and Linda Skidmore-Roth, RN, MSN, NP. Acacia is also reported to lower cholesterol, reduce plaque formation and increase gum health.

    Cautions

    • Pregnant or lactating women, children, and people with contact dermatitis should not use acacia, Skidmore-Roth asserts.
