What Is Astragalus Membranaceus?

Astragalus membranaceus, also called astragalus and Chinese milkvetch, is a perennial plant native to China. Traditional Chinese herbalists have prescribed the herb to their patients for thousands of years to stimulate the immune system.

    • Astragalus grows between 16 and 36 inches tall. It has compound leaves made of 12 to 18 opposite leaflets, hairy stems and pale yellow flowers that bloom around the middle of summer. Growers harvest and dry the roots from 4-year-old astragalus plants for use in medicinal preparations.
