How to Store Organic Herbs

Organic herbs are grown naturally without use of pesticides or growth hormones, which enhance plant production. Organic herbs are often favored over others, as their flavor is believed to be more potent and natural. However, organic herbs do not retain their freshness for very long without proper storage methods. Before you prepare to store organic herbs, take into account when you will use them.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the herbs on a flat working surface if they are not dried. Bundle them together by their stems and tie a string tightly around the base. Hang them for two weeks in a dark, cool area to allow them to dry. Cut the herbs from the bundle, rather than untying them, as the stems beneath the string often do not dry.

    • 2

Place the dried herbs into a plastic sandwich bag and press all of the air out before sealing. Seal the bag thoroughly so air cannot enter.

    • 3

Store the dried herbs in a dark, cool cabinet if you plan to use them soon. Dried organic herbs will maintain full potency in a cabinet for up to two month's time.

    • 4

Place the dried herbs into the freezer if you plan to use them over an extended period. Dried herbs will retain potency for up to 12 months when stored in the freezer.
