How to Grow Rue From Seeds

Ruta graveolens, or common rue, has ornamental, medicinal and culinary uses. The plant has bitter leaves that may be added to salads, sandwiches or vinegars. The plant is evergreen and may be planted as a hedge or in knot gardens. The plant can cause contact dermatitis, and gardeners must wear gloves when pruning the plant. Rue will grow in poor, dry soil and full sun. The plant will self-seed and must be deadheaded to prevent reseeding.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a location to grow rue that is hot, dry and sandy. Rue does not grow well in rich loamy soil or clay that may become waterlogged.

    • 2

Sow seeds directly on the surface of the soil when the soil heats to at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 3

Water rue to encourage germination. Rue germination is erratic. The seeds may sprout anywhere from one week to one month after being sown in the soil. Continue to water with the equivalent of 1 inch of rainfall per week until the plant becomes established.

    • 4

Water rue only in drought conditions once it becomes established. Rue will tolerate sandy soil and drought conditions, but will not do well if overwatered.

    • 5

Trim rue stems that become too spindly or leggy. Rue will grow in a tight compact mound. Wear gloves when trimming rue to prevent injury from sap.

    • 6

Mulch rue heavily with straw in winter to protect it against frost damage. Rue is hardy to zones 4 through 9. Remove straw mulch in spring by raking it away.
